Many hit the beach to experience Irmas impacts

first_img “I guess we don’t really see storms, like huge hit Carolina Beach. So, it is kind of cool to see what could happen,” Sarah Marchant said.“It’s cool. The waves, huge coming in hitting the rocks, splashing, there nothing like it,” Tyler Swanson said.Winds really picked up, but there was not much rain earlier in the day. Some people described it as a moment to embrace what mother nature has to offer.Related Article: Kure Beach residents discuss living with coyotes“It’s just an incredible Mother Nature thing that’s going on and we’re lucky enough to be safe,” Kathleen Morrison said. The winds got stronger into the night, whipping up sand and water. Though many enjoyed taking in the sights and sounds of the storm, it’s important to remember that safety is priority.“I just hope everybody is safe and have fun in the storm,” Swanson said. “If you’re not used to it, definitely stay indoors, but I mean if you’ve been through it before, like worse than this, than yeah, come out and see what is going on,” Marchant said. KURE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — It is a far cry from what Florida and other southern states are dealing with, but the Cape Fear is still feeling some effects from Irma.As the waves were crashing into the beaches by Fort Fisher, dozens of people were coming out to watch. Some said that as worried as they may be, this was a spectacle worth seeing. As the winds and waves got stronger, people were still hit the beaches into the night.- Advertisement – last_img read more

(Photo: NC Leg) BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — NCGOP announced Wednesday that North Carolina Representative Bill Brisson of Bladen County switched his registration from Democrat to Republican.NCGOP Chairman Robin Hayes welcomed Brisson to the Republican Party:- Advertisement – “Rep. Brisson has been a hard-working and conservative voice in our state legislature for quite some time now. We are elated with his decision to switch his registration to a political party that will better serve himself and his constituents. I look forward to working with him to spread Republican values and make the 22nd district the best it can be.”North Carolina Democratic Party Chair Wayne Goodwin released the following statement after Rep. Brisson announced he’s changing his party affiliation:“Rep. Brisson is an honest public servant, but one who rarely caucuses with Democrats and votes more than nine out of ten times with the Republican majority. Our party remains committed to fighting for every seat possible in order to retake the majority by 2020. Under fairer maps in 2018 we are confident we will break the Republican supermajority. Our goal is to provide Governor Cooper with a Democratic Caucus that will stand with him in fighting to improve education, grow the economy, and ensure North Carolinians are ready for the jobs available today and created tomorrow. Today’s news does not change the calculus needed to reach that goal.”Related Article: ‘Prepare to be eviscerated’: McCrory to teach politics at UNC Chapel HillWe have reached out to Brisson for a comment, but haven’t heard back. Businesses react to downtown Wilmington vandalism

first_imgWILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Police are searching for a man caught on video spraying graffiti in several areas of downtown Wilmington.WWAY reached out to several business owners to hear their thoughts on the vandalism.- Advertisement – Gene Vadies has owned Barouke Exotic Woods in the Old Wilmington City Market for more than two decades.“Hopefully this is not the beginning of something bigger in Wilmington. The tourist district is the pearl of this city, and we’re all trying to keep it looking nice,” said Vadies.Vadies also helps manage the market.Related Article: Arrest made in Wilmington shooting that injured man“This is bad for tourism,” Vadies said. “Because the tourists walk down the street and they see this, and they think ‘gee, the last time I’ve seen this is Philadelphia, or Newark, New Jersey.’”Last week, a man who signs his work “The Creator” used spray paint to vandalize the market, along with several other businesses and structures in downtown Wilmington.“It’s very hard to understand, it’s hard to read, the English is not very good, I don’t think he did very well in school,” said Vadies. In addition to the market, graffiti signed ‘The Creator’ or simply ‘C’ has popped up at The George on the Riverwalk, the Market Street Parking Deck, and the Groove Jet Salon. Most if not all of the graffiti has since been painted over, but one woman whose balcony overlooks the salon says someone re-sprayed the wall sometime before 3:00 a.m. Sunday.Police have posted video of the suspect on social media, hoping someone can identify him. He appears to drive a white Ford Freestyle.Vadies, who has lived in New York and says he’s seen his fair share of graffiti, says he has his own ideas about the creator.“I would say a young person who doesn’t seem to fit in, he’s crying out for help, he is trying to develop some sort of identity,” said Vadies. The George on the Riverwalk general manager Matt Babson released a statement to WWAY, saying: “We were very disappointed that this sort of thing still happens. We want to express our appreciation to WDI and the Downtown Ambassadors for painting over the graffiti for us, and we hope the police can identify the individual responsible soon.”Groove Jet Salon owner Brandy Alexander also released a statement, saying: “Whoever is vandalizing our building through graffiti is just seeking to be heard on what they feel is important to them. I hope they choose to seek respectful person to person conversations to voice their views as well as hear others. Graffiti doesn’t solve someone feeling lonely but conversations at least allow a seat at the table to be heard.”If you have any information, contact Wilmington Police.last_img read more

Rice announces tuition and financial aid increases for fall 2009

first_imgFacebookTwitterPrintEmailAddThis ShareCONTACT: B.J. AlmondPHONE: 713-348-6770E-MAIL: balmond@rice.eduRice announces tuition and financial aid increases for fall 2009Rice University today announced that tuition for the 2009-10 freshman class will be $31,430 — an increase of 4.9 percent or $1,470 over last fall. In addition, the university announced increases in financial aid.“We are balancing two important priorities during these difficult times: keeping a Rice education accessible and affordable for students while generating the resources we need to provide these outstanding young scholars with one of the best undergraduate educations in the country,”President David Leebron said. Financial aidLearn more about the financial aid programs provided by Rice New financial-aid policyRice expands its financial-aid policy to help families with the nation’s economic downturn Best valueRice ranks among the nation’s best for its outstanding value “The additional aid recognizes the difficulties that many families are facing. The modest tuition increase helps support our campus and keep our research and education at the high level of quality our students expect and deserve.”The university has announced several enhancements to financial aid available to entering students. Rice also adjusts need-based aid packages, as necessary, for enrolled students to accommodate tuition increases. The university previously announced that it had increased the no-loan threshold for financial aid packages to $80,000, up from $60,000, for entering students this fall. This means that students who qualify for need-based aid from families whose annual incomes are $80,000 or less will not be required to take out loans to pay for their education. The university has also lowered the cap on loans in financial-aid packages for need-eligible incoming freshmen to $10,000 for their four undergraduate years — down from $14,500 for freshmen who entered in fall 2008. Rice has a policy of need-blind admission. About 30 percent of the freshman class will receive a merit scholarship. Overall, about 60 percent of Rice undergraduates receive some form of financial support.Room and board for 2009-10 will increase $480 to $11,230. The total charge for entering students, including tuition, fees and room and board, will be $43,287. Next year’s tuition for current undergraduates will increase 4.9 percent over their present rate. For sophomores and juniors, that means the same rate as entering freshmen. For seniors and fifth-year students, tuition will be $30,920 and $28,700, respectively.Tuition for most graduate students will also increase 4.9 percent, or $1,470, to $31,430. For students entering the MBA program at the Jones Graduate School of Management, tuition will increase 11.1 percent, or $4,000, to $40,000. Jones School tuition includes the cost of a laptop computer.Even with the increase, Rice’s tuition is expected to be $5,000 to $7,000 less than that charged by other premier research universities. Both Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine and the Princeton Review’s “Best Value Colleges for 2009” ranked Rice No. 4 on this year’s list of private schools that offer an exceptional education and an outstanding economic value.Leebron said that Rice’s endowment had fallen by about 20 percent as of the end of 2008, or close to $1 billion, and has suffered additional losses so far this year. Earnings from the endowment support about 45 percent of the university’s total budget, while tuition covers only 37 percent of the cost of providing an undergraduate education. The university plans to reduce spending by 5 percent in the fiscal year beginning July 1 and has taken several other cost-saving steps.“Our goal is to continue supporting the very best in education and research, while at the same time asking all parts of the Rice community to help with the challenges created by a deep and prolonged economic downturn,” Leebron said.“Students who come to Rice know that they’ll be learning and researching with some of the most accomplished professors in the country and working alongside talented, motivated fellow students from around the world,” said Chris Muñoz, vice president for enrollment. “Our goal is to make sure no student misses out on the Rice experience because of a lack of financial resources. We want the brightest, most promising students from every background.”For more information about Rice and its financial aid programs and to apply, go to http://www.futureowls.rice.edu.last_img read more

When it comes to population growth Houston is No 1

first_img Media note: A link to a Rice-produced video for this story is available at the end of the news release. A high-definition, unedited version is available via FTP and Dropbox. When it comes to population growth, Houston is No. 1 New York, Los Angeles and Chicago are still America’s largest metropolitan areas, but none of the nation’s 366 metropolitan areas added more people during the past decade than Houston. Based on a new extensive analysis of the 2000 and 2010 censuses by Rice University’s Kinder Institute for Urban Research, the Greater Houston metropolitan area grew by a whopping 1.2 million people and increased by more than 123,000 per year over the decade. AddThis “Houston’s growth represents more people than the population growth in the New York and Chicago metropolitan areas combined during the past decade,” said Michael Emerson, co-director of the Kinder Institute. “Houston’s growth alone accounts for more people than the nation’s 14 smallest metropolitan areas combined. It is more than the number of people who live in the Buffalo metropolitan area, and more than in the New Orleans metropolitan area — and it is more than the number of people in 322 of the nation’s 366 metropolitan areas.” While 42 of the nation’s metropolitan areas actually lost population, Emerson said, Houston capitalized on its closeness to Latin America, its emergence as a major destination for immigrants from around the world, the area’s pro-business policies, low cost of living, significant job growth and location in the fastest-growing state in the nation.Following closely behind Houston is another Texas giant, the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area, which grew by just 21,000 fewer people over the decade than Houston. If the growth of two other Texas metropolitan areas — Austin and San Antonio – is factored in, only 13 other metropolitan areas in the country have as many people as these four metropolitan areas added to their populations over the decade. Austin grew by almost 467,000 people and San Antonio by about 431,000, which put them both in the top 13 metropolitan areas for population growth.”As of 2011, the population increases in the Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan areas have catapulted the two cities into the No. 5 (Houston) and No. 4 (Dallas-Fort Worth) largest metropolitan areas in the United States,” Emerson said. The only other metropolitan area to grow by more than 1 million people over the 2000-2010 decade was Atlanta, which is the nation’s ninth largest metro. The trend of U.S. population growth being concentrated in the South and the Southwest — which has been true for several decades — continues and, if anything, is intensifying, Emerson said. Of the 15 metropolitan areas that added the most people, only New York (No. 7) and Seattle (No. 15) are not in the South or the Southwest. “A significant portion of the population growth in these Southern and Southwestern metropolitan areas is not due to the relocation of Americans from colder climates but to the influx of immigrants moving directly into these Southern and Southwestern metropolitan areas,” Emerson said. “This is the secret of Houston’s phenomenal growth over the past decade. It comes not primarily from relocating or retiring Americans but from first-generation immigrants and from their children born in Houston.” The researchers’ analysis is based on the official Census Bureau definition: “The general concept of a metropolitan area is that of a large population nucleus, together with adjacent communities having a high degree of social and economic integration with that core. Metropolitan areas comprise one or more entire counties, except in New England, where cities and towns are the basic geographic units.” The 30 U.S. metropolitan areas with the greatest population growth, 2000-2010 1. (Reuters/Mike Stocker/Pool)The building on the school campus where 17 people were murdered is expected to be demolished. Florida lawmakers decided on Feb. 15 to provide the resources needed to demolish the building as it will be traumatic for students to have to return to it.“This building has to come down,” Sen. Bill Galvano told the Miami Herald during a visit to the school.“It will still be very difficult for students to return,” Galvano said. “But that particular building should be razed, and the memory of the perpetrator erased and a memorial honoring the victims and their families be put in its place.”From NTD.tv “What you are looking at is the third-floor teachers’ lounge, which faces west, Cruz was trying to shoot those windows out from the inside, creating a perch so he could act like a sniper — little did he know, those windows are hurricane windows and they won’t shatter. Had he been able to get those shot out, who knows how many more people would’ve died, because he would’ve had sight to a wide-open courtyard where the other buildings funnel,’ the source told the news station.
