Video Editing: Additive vs. Subtractive Color Correction

Yes, you can make adjustments to the other controls to make it look a little better, but it takes a lot of work with minimal results.Subtractive Color CorrectionNow look at how a subtractive color corrector works. In this case, I used Colorista Free by Red Giant Software. It’s a great color corrector, FREE, works on a ton of platforms, translates to After Effects, and it’s pretty much my default NLE color corrector when I don’t want to go into a full-fledged grading program.We’ll add a little bit of blue into the shadows like before: When you add a little bit of blue into the shadows, look how the image and the RGB parade respond: If you have a choice, you’ll find subtractive color correctors much more pleasant to use with better results in less time. It’s a no brainer when getting fast grading results in your video editing projects!What kind of color correction filter do you use?Share your thoughts and advice in the comments below! Notice how much more pleasing the results are compared to the additive corrector. Also notice that the blue channel in the parade pretty much stayed the same, and the other channels went down. That’s how a subtractive color corrector works: instead of adding the color you want into the shot, it takes away the opposite color (or really amount of the red, green, and blue that make up the opposite color).Here’s an even more extreme example with Colorsita. Yes, the shot starts to get a little dark, but you still have a real black point, so you can just lift the shadows a bit to correct while keeping the pleasing look:center_img Not all 3-way color correctors are created equal. Use a subtractive 3-way color corrector instead of an additive one for better results.Just like there are two types of color theory, there are two types of color correctors: additive and subtractive. Both old-school Final Cut Pro 7 and Premiere Pro (even the most current version) ship with additive 3-way color correctors built in. The problem is that additive color correctors don’t really give great results very easily. As a matter of fact, they can really be junk when it comes to making great looks in your video editing projects without a ton of effort.Additive Color CorrectionLook at the very simple adjustment below. First is the original and its RGB parade: You’ll notice that the blue channel has been lifted – blue has been added into the image (look at the hair closely). The shadows on the image look pretty terrible, don’t they? Welcome to the Magazine Spin Zone

first_imgTotal magazine rate-card-reported advertising revenue through the first three quarters of 2008 closed at $18,452,988,859, posting a 5% decline against the previous year, according to Publishers Information Bureau (PIB).  There were 164,125 ad pages generated through the first three quarters of the year, a drop of 9.5% compared to the same period in 2007. Now, why did the MPA choose to highlight year-to-date ad performance first? Well, that’s because the third quarter was even worse:For the third quarter, total magazine rate-card-reported advertising revenue generated $5,988,323,154, which was an 8.8% decrease compared to 2007’s third quarter.  There were 52,778 advertising pages in the third quarter, a drop of 12.9% compared to the same period in 2007.  Talk about burying the lead. It’s like reading game reports by Kansas City Royals beat reporters. (“The Royals lost 12-1 again? Let’s go with this headline: ‘Royals Reliever Tosses Scoreless Inning’!”)The MPA is not alone here. American Business Media, the b-to-b association, is just as guilty in projecting confidence while their members are hemorrhaging print ad dollars. (They’re just slow in reporting it—the Business Information Network, ABM’s monthly equivalent to PIB, is only on June.)And it’s not just the associations. PR firms are also prone to passing out the Kool-Aid. After one of the recent PIB reports, one magazine flack sent an e-mail boasting that her title was flat. (“Flat is the new up, right?!?!”)I don’t necessarily blame PR reps for spinning the numbers. It’s their job to do that. But I don’t understand why associations have to. It’s not like their members don’t realize how scary it is out there.Why won’t the MPA or ABM acknowledge reality? Because, like it or not, it’s here. And it’s not going away anytime soon. Every three months, the Publishers Information Bureau, the part of the Magazine Publishers of America which counts advertising pages and estimates rate card revenue, puts out a press release summarizing the performance for the previous quarter. And, like clockwork, the copy of that press release reads like pro-print, partisan spin. Every time. Friends, it drives me crazy.This week’s PIB release was no different. Here was the headline the MPA went with:FOOD & FOOD PRODUCTS AND RETAIL LEAD AD CATEGORIES IN REVENUE GAINS THROUGH FIRST THREE QUARTERS OF 2008Yes, yes they did. One minor point the MPA chose not to highlight in the headline: including food and retail, there were a total of three—three—categories that posted revenue gains through September. The new RDX is built in East Liberty, Ohio. 2019 Honda Pilot Elite: A smoother, tech-rich crossover SUV 1 Trucks Honda RidgelineAgain keeping the status quo, the Honda Ridgeline maintains third place on the American Made Index. This crossover-that-looks-like-a-truck provides a better ride than a traditional pickup and gets an awesome lockable trunk right in the floor of the bed. And it doesn’t do the truck stuff too badly, either, as it’s able to carry 1,860 pounds of payload and tow 3,500 pounds.The Ridgeline is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 good for 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. That is channeled through a six-speed automatic transmission with available all-wheel drive. It’s built in Lincoln, Alabama. 49 Photos 5 Photos Acura MDXMoving up one slot to sixth place on the American Made Index is the non-hybrid variant of the Acura MDX. With its SH-AWD system, the MDX is one of the better handling midsize luxury crossovers, and for 2019 the company gives us the A-Spec treatment with a new front fascia and side skirts, 20-inch wheels, wider exhaust tips, unique gauges, a new steering wheel, carbon fiber trim and various Alcantara interior touches.However, both the standard and A-Spec models get a 3.5-liter V6 engine, rated for 290 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque going through a nine-speed automatic transmission. The Acura MDX is made in East Liberty, Ohio.  2019 Honda Odyssey offers plenty of room and features for families 69 Photoscenter_img Chevrolet ColoradoMaking its debut in the top 10 is the Chevrolet Colorado. Shown here in the tough ZR2 Bison off-road spec, the Chevy Colorado is an excellent truck and one of the two midsize pickups you can get with a diesel engine. Adding to the ZR2’s two-inch lift and front and rear locking differentials, the Bison gets beefier skid plates (trust me, that’s a good thing), steel bumpers and integrated recovery points. Heck, you can even get a snorkel.Base models get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a six-speed manual transmission, but a more popular choice is the 3.6-liter V6 gas engine with 308 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Meanwhile, the 2.8-liter diesel pumps out 186 horsepower and a delicious 369 pound-feet of twist and is mated to a six-speed automatic. The Chevy Colorado is built in Wentzville, Missouri. 2019 Acura MDX adds new features and an A-Spec model General Motors Chevrolet Honda Jeep Acura GMC CanyonIf you’re looking for a slightly fancier version of the Colorado that’s more focused on luxe than dirt, check out the GMC Canyon. The top Denali trim gets standard heated and ventilated front seats as well as a heated steering wheel. Maximum payload capability is 1,665 pounds while max towing is a fairly healthy 7,600 pounds.The Canyon is available with the same 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, 3.6-liter V6 or 2.8-liter diesel as the Chevrolet Colorado. While the 2019 model doesn’t see any changes from last, it’s still a darn good choice for families on the go with reconfigurable seats, Wi-Fi and an excellent rear-seat entertainment system. The Cabin Watch video system lets parents keep an eye on their little darlings without turning around in their seats, while Cabin Talk amplifies their voice so no yelling is required.The Odyssey is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 rated for 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. Most trims get a nine-speed automatic but the top Touring and Elite trims now use a 10-speed automatic with stop-start technology. The Honda Odyssey is made in Lincoln, Alabama. An available 8-inch touchscreen gets Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as a Wi-Fi hotspot.Under the hood is the stalwart 3.5-liter V6 producing 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. However unlike the Ridgeline, the Passport sends that power through a nine-speed automatic transmission. Having said that, just like the Ridgeline, this is the only powertrain available. Jeep With high trade tensions looming and increasing talk of tariffs, more and more consumers are looking to buy American. Cars.com has released its annual American Made Index, showcasing companies that use the most American-sourced parts and labor in their vehicles. The results may surprise you.Cars.com analyzed more than 100 US-built vehicles for five key data points: manufacturing location, parts sourcing, US employment, engine sourcing and transmission sourcing. You might think something like the Ford F-150 would top the list, but it drops from its No. 5 spot for 2018 and out of the top 10 completely. Even the first-place holder, the Jeep Cherokee, is a pretty global product. It’s a Jeep, sure, but that brand is part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, an Italian-owned business.Cars.com surveyed 1,000 people and found that half are concerned about automotive import tariffs, with 41% saying they are unsure if tariffs would make them more likely to buy American. Nissan Nissan on Thursday revealed a project truck that will be donated to the Grand Canyon Conservancy. The Ultimate Parks Titan, based on a 2019 Nissan Titan XD, will be used by the Canyon Field School, an organization that helps young people visit and explore Grand Canyon National Park. It follows on the earlier Ultimate Service Titan and Ultimate Work Titan, which were built for the Red Cross and Habitat for Humanity, respectively.With that use in mind, the Ultimate Parks Titan needed to be able to travel long distances over varied terrain. The project started with a 2019 Titan XD Pro-4X powered by the truck’s 5.6-liter gasoline V8 engine. To build on that base, Nissan added an Icon 3-inch lift kit and Hellwig air suspension, as well as 35-inch Nitto Trail Grappler off-road tires.Aft of the cab, the Titan XD’s frame was extended and its traditional bed removed. In its place is a custom bed from CM Truck Beds, with a variety of locking compartments, storage bins and equipment racks. There’s also a 55-gallon fuel tank and fuel cell, as Nissan notes the truck might spend long periods of time away from a fueling station.Included accessories range from a Warn Industries Wrench and Baja Designs lighting, to a welder, air compressors and generator. The Titan tows a Black Series Camper off-road trailer, which also features a Rhino Rack Batwing awning for getting some shade from the sun. Both truck and trailer have a special body wrap featuring topographical lines from the north rim of the Grand Canyon.The Nissan Ultimate Parks Titan will be displayed this week at Overland Expo West in Flagstaff, Arizona. “We can’t wait for it to be put to work by the exceptional men and women improving our national parks every day,” Tiago Castro, Nissan North America director of light commercial vehicles, said in a statement. 2019 Acura RDX A-Spec: Sharp handling, sharper looks 2019 Honda Passport: A well-rounded midsize offering Chevrolet CorvetteMoving up from the 10th-place slot last year is the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette. While we’ve all been ogling the new mid-engine Corvette, it’s easy to forget what a performance bargain the current-generation ‘Vette is. From the base trim to the Grand Sport to the bonkers ZR1, the Corvette is an American icon.My preference is for the Grand Sport, which strikes a perfect balance between everyday drivability and canyon-carving performance. The 6.2-liter V8 puts out 460 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. You can get it with a seven-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission, but the kicker is the borrowed chassis and aero parts from the beefier Z06. Like I said, perfect balance. The Corvette is made in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Budget 2016 Food ministry wants 20B in subsidies for next fiscal

first_imgThe food ministry is reportedly seeking Rs 1.40 trillion ($20.40 billion) in subsidies for 2016-17 to a run massive food welfare programme in the country following droughts in the past two years, said a senior government official.If the ministry’s request is met, the subsidy amount for food schemes will go up 13 percent compared to the subsidy given a year earlier.”In its previous Budget, the government had allocated Rs 1.24 trillion as food subsidy for 2015-16, but we now need Rs 1.40 trillion for next year. Let’s see what’s in store for us in the Budget,” the source, requesting anonymity, told Reuters.The Narendra Modi government is making efforts to reduce subsidy spending in order to invest in manufacturing and infrastructure, even as it implements the mammoth food welfare plan introduced by the UPA government led by Manmohan Singh.The finance ministry is yet to settle an outstanding food subsidy bill of about Rs 560 billion, according to the source.In August 2013, the previous Congress-led government had approved the National Food Security Act (NFSA), which is aimed at providing access to quality food at affordable prices.
