Brands turn to online video marketing

first_img23 June 2008Major brands such as FHM, Sports Illustrated, Cosmopolitan, Die Burger and Kick Off are moving into the online video scene, with each having their own dedicated brand channel on MyVideo.co.za, which bills itself as South Africa’s first online video platform.MyVideo.co.za said in a statement this week that online video consumption has internationally proven to be a hugely successful way to spread brand messages, and that international brands have leveraged significant gains in brand awareness through the integrated use of online videos in their marketing strategies.“MyVideo’s South African focus allows local brands for the first time to do the same amongst South African consumers,” MyVideo.co.za said.Brand channels can also be extended onto a brand’s current website, with Kick Off Magazine being one of the many brands that use the MyVideo Channel offering on their website.“Not only has our website broadened to include videos we have posted online through MyVideo, but we now have another avenue to touch our readers through a different media form,” says MyVideo online business manager Nick Said.MyVideo, launched in January 2007, set out to improve the internet video-sharing model by creating a site specifically targeted at South African internet users.“Where videos posted on YouTube are likely to get lost in a sea of clutter, MyVideo ensures that South African content is aired as the sole focus, ensuring that companies who use it are connecting with targeted internet traffic,” says MyVideo marketing officer Tristan Owen.South African brands have traditionally used television commercials as their only form of consumer-focused video content, MyVideo says, adding however, that the rise of online on-demand video has created a need for video content that both entertains and communicates a subtle brand.“By developing content that is both relevant to your brand as well as topical to users, you are creating an empire of possibilities,” says Owen.SAinfo reporter Would you like to use this article in your publicationor on your website?See: Using SAinfo materiallast_img read more

Report is bullish soybean, and wheat; somewhat negative corn

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest USDA estimates of U.S. corn acres were 90.9 million acres, soybean acres were 89.5 million acres, and wheat acres were 45.7 million acres.  June 1 corn stocks were 5.225 billion bushels, soybean stocks were 963 million bushels, and wheat stocks were 1.184 billion bushels.Soybeans were higher due to less than expected stocks, wheat was higher due to spring wheat acres less than expected, corn was off the highs due to higher than expected stocks. All eyes are upon USDA with two big reports, the June 30 Grain Stocks Report and the June 30 Acres Report. Grain stocks are all expected to be above those of last year. It is just a matter of how big the stocks are for corn, soybeans, and wheat. The trade was looking for corn stocks as of June 1 to be 5.123 billion bushels and compares to 4.711 billion bushels last year. Soybean stocks are estimated to be near 983 million bushels, last year they were 872 million bushels. Wheat stocks in the U.S. should be near 1.137 billion bushels, last year they were 976 million bushels.Trader estimates had U.S. corn acres at 89.9 million acres. The March 31 USDA Planting Intentions Report had corn acres at 90 million acres. Last year the U.S. planted 94 million acres of corn. Traders estimated U.S. soybean acres at 89.75 million acres. The March number was 89.5 million acres while last year the U.S. planted 83.4 million acres of soybeans. Wheat acres should be near 46.1 million acres, the same number from the March USDA report. Last year they were 50.2 million wheat acres. Traders are expecting soybean acres to exceed corn acres for the first time since 1983.Before the report corn was up 7 cents, soybeans down 1 cent, while wheat was up 20 cents or more as weather forecasts next week for the spring wheat areas of North Dakota are currently calling for temperatures of 100 to 105 degrees. That forecast is moving Kansas City and Chicago wheat higher as well. Mid-morning July CBOT wheat was trading at $5.01 which is up 21 cents, the highest level since late July 2016.With the weather doing the typical July 4th holiday of extreme weather uncertainty and huge price volatility, keep in mind that the markets will close early on Monday at 1 pm EDT, no trade Monday evening, Tuesday day or evening. The CBOT will re-open on Wednesday at 9:30 am EDT. Price action at the 9:30 am Wednesday re-open could be up or down big numbers.December CBOT corn prices during June had a range of $4.09-$3.74. November CBOT soybeans had a range in June of $9.58-$9.07 while July CBOT wheat had a range of $5.01 to $4.21. In good weather years prices typically peak in June and move lower into the fall harvest. With corn and soybean conditions below those seen last year, the price volatility in July and August could be swift and extreme.Look for grain prices to quickly return to weather shortly.last_img read more

Seven Side Effects of Successful Savings

first_imgAbility to Drop Insurance Policies– A good example here is term life insurance. As people grow older, it becomes move expensive. Diligent savers, however, may not need a policy anymore, after a certain point, if their accumulated savings is sufficient to protect their loved ones. By Barbara O’Neill, Ph.D., CFP®, Rutgers Cooperative Extension, oneill@aesop.rutgers.eduDuring January, many military families make resolutions to save money. Some people set up an automatic savings plan with a bank or employer while others follow the guidelines suggested by one of many available savings challenges (see this presentation).Find more info at http://militarysaves.org/The most important result of saving is having a sum of money available to use for emergencies or to fund future financial goals such as a vacation, new car, or retirement. With savings also comes peace of mind in knowing that you’re not on the “financial edge” with little or no money in reserve to handle negative life events.Having an accumulated sum of money and freedom from financial worries are not the only benefits of saving money, however. Rather, savings can enhance your personal finances in a variety of beneficial ways. Below is a description of seven positive side effects that can occur when people save money on a regular basis over time:Ability to Earn “Free Money”- Savers can take advantage of retirement plans that their employer offers. Deposits come right out of their paycheck, making it easy to save. Some employers match workers’ savings 25 cents, 50 cents, or even a dollar for each dollar saved. This is “free money” that should not be passed up. Ability to Self-Insure– Some people self-insure to cover the risk of needing long-term care (LTC) in later life instead of buying LTC insurance. Savings is earmarked for a nursing home or assisted living, if needed. Ability to Raise Insurance Deductibles and Increase Elimination Periods- With sufficient money in the bank, you can cut insurance premiums by taking on more of the risk of a loss. Examples include raising a car insurance deductible from $250 to $750 or a disability insurance elimination period (i.e., the time between an accident or illness and receipt of benefits) from 30 days to 90 days. Ability to Pay Cash for “Big Ticket” Items and Avoid Interest- When you save money for furniture, appliances, electronics, and even a car, you own it completely from Day 1. Use this worksheet to calculate what you need to save to reach your goals. Ability to Avoid Fees– People with ample savings can avoid pesky money-draining expenses such as fees for low bank account balances, late payments, and private mortgage insurance (PMI). Ability to Reach the “Crossover Point”- Savings provides “seed money” for long-term investing. Savings provides interest and investments produce dividends and capital gains. Eventually a crossover point can occur where savings and investments earn more money per year than the sum of annual living expenses. The only sure-fire way to get ahead financially is to spend less than you earn. Counting on a big inheritance or a settlement, or winning a big prize or the lottery cannot be guaranteed. Every successful financial plan includes some type of savings, which requires living below your means. In summary, saving money has many valuable side effects besides the actual dollar amount that is saved. It gives people freedom and options. For more savings information, see America Saves.last_img read more

How To Slow the Game

first_imgGreat athletes perceive the sport or game they play as occurring at a much slower pace than others. Someone without the training, the development, and the experience would see the speed as shockingly fast. There was an Air Force colonel named John Boyd. Boyd developed the OODA loop. The first “O” stands for observe. The second “O” stands for orient. The “D” is for decide. And the “A” is for act.Boyd discovered the OODA loop while designing fighter jets for the United States Air Force. At some point, Boyd recognized its usefulness and strategy. The United States Marine Corps calls this “maneuver warfare.” And you can ask any Marine about OODA loops, and they’ll know what you are talking about. It takes training, development, and situational knowledge (or experience, if you prefer) for your perception of the game to slow.Training: The more time you spend training real-life situations (and for sales, this means role-plays around client interactions), the more you will have an opportunity to orient yourself to what you are seeing and hearing, to make observations, to decide how to respond, and then to act accordingly. The best performers in any human endeavor spend time training.Training slows the game by providing you with the opportunity to make observations and orient yourself. It also lets you experiment with decisions and actions.Development: Development is something more than training. It’s a maturation process. It’s a focused plan for growth. If you think about a great athlete, their entire life is a series of development. They learn fundamentals at a very young age. They learn more complicated skills and ideas as they mature. And as they reach higher and higher levels, they are given different developmental tasks in training.Development slows the game by increasing your skills at observing and orienting more and more subtle differences. The reason a Grand Master at chess can play 16 games at the same time is because she only needs to see the pattern. Having studied the patterns before, she no longer has to spend time observing and orienting. This is true for sales professionals, too.Situational Knowledge: Training and development are different from actually playing the game. The circumstances of playing the game are very different. The stakes are very real. There is a price to pay for making mistakes, namely losing the game when it comes to sports. The stakes are higher in real, must-win, high visibility, high-value deals. It’s the experience gained playing at this level that ratchets up the situational knowledge and slows the game. You see the patterns. You recognize the patterns. You leverage your training and development and past experiences to speed up the time it takes you to observe, orient, decide and act.If you are new to sales, some client interactions can seem to sweep you off your feet. Aggressive questions and objections can make it feel as if you have too little time to make the observations, orient yourself and make a good decision worth acting on. But if you study and train like a professional, if you spend time working on understanding your experiences and the decisions you made, the game will slow down. And when it’s slower, it’s an easier game to play.last_img read more

Enhancing the competitiveness of the railway sector

first_img Citation: Enhancing the competitiveness of the railway sector (2018, June 28) retrieved 18 July 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2018-06-competitiveness-railway-sector.html Enhancing the competitiveness and attractiveness of the railway sector – the core ambition of the Shift2Rail joint undertaking – requires other projects to clear the way. The ROLL2RAIL project played this role by focusing on novel rolling stock technologies and methodologies. Future trains should be more energy-efficient, lighter, more reliable, have more capacity, cost less over their life cycle, be connected and be more comfortable and attractive. Only then will the railway sector be able to raise its market share. Of course, getting there won’t be easy: there are many obstacles to such radical innovation, and technologies with the potential to rise to this challenge are only in their infancy. This is the context that saw the launch of ROLL2RAIL (New Dependable Rolling Stock for a More Sustainable, Intelligent and Comfortable Rail Transport in Europe), an EU-funded project aiming to develop key technologies and remove blocking points for radical innovation in the field of rolling stock. Being part of a wider long-term strategy to shape the rolling stock of the future and ensure suitable results for integration in Shift2Rail, the project addressed several sub-systems including traction, TCMS, carbody, running gear, brakes, interiors, noise and energy.”Traction systems have reached their maximum possible efficiency with current power electronics technology (silicon). Our goal was to reap all the benefits of incipient silicon carbide semiconductor technology to create smaller, lighter, more efficient and more reliable railway traction systems, while at the same time addressing low-floor wheel-motor assemblies for high-speed trains,” Mr Andrea Demadonna, coordinator of the project on behalf of UNIFE (The European Rail Industry Association), explains. “We also studied key aspects of performance such as noise emission or reliability/availability, along with possible technical standardisation that will lead to cost reductions.”In 30 months, ROLL2RAIL achieved a substantial reduction in the weight and volume of traction converters and motors, and produced calculations for motor cooling noise and specifications for a semi-conductor based on environmental conditions.Besides traction, the project led to numerous breakthroughs. The first is a Train Control & Management System (TCMS) that uses wireless technologies for train control and monitoring functions, thereby removing the need for onboard communication cables and simplifying the train coupling procedure. The second is a study on adhesive joints as well as on the reduction in weight linked to composite materials; and the third is a market push for running gear technologies and maintenance – in the form of a Europe-wide cost modelling methodology that can quantify the global impact of running gear performance on the economics of the whole railway system. That’s only the tip of the iceberg, as the project also resulted in the following: a set of reduced and harmonised requirements for a braking system to be used in future authorisation processes; a study of publicly available passenger surveys on train comfort and a weighted flexible scoring metric including 24 comfort features; three new noise separation methods (advanced transfer path analysis, beamforming and wave signature extraction) which were tested in real conditions; and an energy norms and standards application guide for KPI generation as well as a calculation methodology. Finally, the consortium developed a KPI tool to assess the impact/improvements of new developments against a baseline.”ROLL2RAIL results have been designed for use by Shift2Rail as the ultimate end-user. Their benefits will impact not only Innovation Programme 1 (Rolling Stock for passengers) but also advanced traffic management and control systems, infrastructure, freight and cross-cutting activities (CCA) such as noise and energy,” Demadonna says. “Shift2Rail will now continue the work we started, in a process that is only natural when considering that more than half of the ROLL2RAIL partners are also members of Shift2Rail.” Explore further Provided by CORDIScenter_img Credit: Denis Belitsky, Shutterstock Designing the future of rail travel This document is subject to copyright.
