Donegal brothers to finally receive bravery awards after rescuing 15 people at sea

first_imgTwo Donegal brothers are to receive national bravery awards next week for their rescue of 15 people from two vessels which got into difficulty off Portnoo more than 60 years ago.Retired fishermen James and Michael Gallagher of Burtonport were on their father’s half decker, Irine and had set out to check lobster pots when a punt nearby with 15 people on board took a wave across the bow and was swamped.“It’s as clear in my mind as if it happened yesterday,” James says, recalling the events of August 22nd, 1956. Independent.ie reports that all 15 on the punt ended up in the water with no lifejackets. Among those rescued was Jean Mavitty, then 15 years old, but her father Desmond Mavitty (49) was one of three who drowned, along with George Warren (55) and Christopher Chambers (7). The young boy was fatally injured by the propellor of a nearby yacht. Those taken ashore by the fishermen included Bruce and Lorna Warren (aged 14 and 17), Robin Chambers (11), David Logan (11), Joe Morton (19), Pat Morton (17), Nevin Kerr (20), Aiden Campbell (15) and Alan Cooper (15). The party had set out to look at the wreck of a coaster, Greenhaven, which had run up on Roaninish island some months before.Jean Mavitty’s son, Robert Morrell, says his late mother often wondered who she could thank, as she had no memory of who had carried out the rescue. The inquest into the three fatalities was held immediately after the incident, and the fishermen were not present. The national bravery awards, conferred this year at Farmleigh House, Dublin, on October 18th, are conferred by the Dáil ceann comhairle on people from all walks of life and all sections of society who have “ carried out a deed of bravery with an effort to save human life involving personal risk”. The Gallagher brothers, now aged 80 and 85, will be joined by Jim Gallagher, son of James and nephew of Michael, who has also spent a life at sea and nominated them for the award.Donegal brothers to finally receive bravery awards after rescuing 15 people at sea was last modified: October 13th, 2019 by Staff WriterShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Dick Vitale Tweets Support For Premise That NCAA Should Leave Indianapolis, Move Events To Other States

first_imgDick Vitale thinks NCAA should move events from Indianapolis.Twitter/@DickieVCollege basketball analyst Dick Vitale is the most recent voice in the world of college sports to come out strongly against a new Indiana bill that would allow local businesses to turn away gay and lesbian customers. The NCAA, which is headquartered in Indianapolis, the city which will host this year’s Final Four, has already expressed concern about the law, and many are calling for the organization to move its operation, and prevent the state from hosting future NCAA events. USA Today’s Nancy Armour wrote a column supporting this idea:It is too late to pull this year’s Final Four from Indianapolis, given it is next weekend and there’s no other city that would have an arena and several thousand hotel rooms available. But the NCAA can – and should – tell Indiana lawmakers that their prejudice and mean-spiritedness has cost the state the privilege of hosting any other collegiate sporting event. The 2016 women’s Final Four currently scheduled to be held in Indianapolis? Not anymore.…And in what would be the biggest threat of all, the NCAA ought to tell Gov. Mike Pence and his lunatic-fringe lawmakers that it no longer feels at home in Indiana and will look at moving its headquarters from Indianapolis to a state where God-given diversity is something to be celebrated rather than feared.Vitale tweeted a picture of the paper, and his support for Armour’s take. This INDIANSA law is #AbsolutelyPATHETIC This 21st century @nrarmour details in USA today & I agree with her premise! pic.twitter.com/BmmwUZTuJv— Dick Vitale (@DickieV) March 27, 2015Whether or not you like Vitale as a broadcaster, he is one of the most respected people in college athletics. Leaked US climate change report should be replicated in Canada Institute

first_imgOTTAWA – The Canadian government should look at trying to replicate the research in a new U.S. report leaked this week that bluntly says climate change is real and is already having an impact on weather patterns in America, a national environmental think tank said Tuesday.Erin Flanagan, director of federal policy for The Pembina Institute, said the American report helps to make the costs of climate change real to people. The report was to be part of the mandated National Climate Change Assessment mandated by law to be produced every four years in the United States. It points to thousands of research studies that demonstrate the reality of a warming planet — the cause of which is largely attributable to greenhouse gas emissions which trap heat in the atmosphere — and the fact that science can now link some extreme weather events to it.Scientists leaked the report to the New York Times, fearing the administration of Donald Trump wouldn’t make the report public because it contradicts the president’s stance that climate change is not real.Flanagan said while some of the science in the report can be applied in Canada, this country has some unique differences, particular the vast north where there is a higher rate of warming. There have been federal government reports in the past that looked at the impacts of climate change in Canada but she said they are not up to date.“I think I’d like to see Canadian scientists do this same kind of research,” said Flanagan.“I think it is time for an update and it does help frame the discussion in Canada which is often about the incremental costs of new policies like a carbon tax without that counter weight. What happens if we don’t do enough or what happens if we do nothing which is certainly not a free pass on costs.”Environment Minister Catherine McKenna would not comment on the U.S. report. She said only, via an emailed statement, that tackling climate change “is the right thing to do.”The most recent federal report on climate change in Canada appears to be a Natural Resources Canada report from 2014.Flanagan said the real choices people have to make about whether to support federal climate change policies need to be informed.“It’s something that will transform our economy and the places we live,” she said. “It’s a missing part of our discourse.”last_img read more

This NWSL Season Has Been Nuts Heres How We Forecast The Finish

As in many of our sports forecasts, each NWSL team’s rating is reverted toward the league average between seasons to account for factors such as changes in personnel and retirements. For the NWSL, two-thirds of a team’s rating from the previous season carries over into the new season; that amount is based on the first three seasons and is in line with other soccer leagues around the world (both men’s and women’s). This year’s results, however, may indicate that NWSL teams should be reverted further toward the league average each season. Or maybe this is just a crazy season. Only time (and more data) will tell. If at the start of the National Women’s Soccer League season you thought two-time defending champions FC Kansas City would be in third-to-last place just over halfway through the season or that two-time regular-season champions Seattle Reign FC would have almost as many losses as they did in their previous two seasons combined, you’re either psychic or your predictive abilities are far greater than ours. Before this year’s matches got underway, we built a model to forecast the league using the best information we had available: data from the three previous NWSL seasons. But because two of those years were dominated by Seattle and Kansas City, correctly predicting this year’s chaos in the league would have been very difficult. So with the table in tumult and the end of the regular season not far off, we thought this would be good time to update our initial predictions, see what’s changed and look ahead to which four teams are most likely to reach the playoffs this fall. Below is a table showing each team’s overall rating — made up of offensive and defensive components (higher is better for both) — as well as its projected win-loss-tie record and its chances of making the playoffs. Sky Blue97.299.494.57.36.95.82073 Kansas City103.696.1113.26.08.35.7521 TEAMOVERALLOFF.DEF.WLTPLAYOFFSFINALSWIN This year’s surprise standout, the Western New York Flash, has skyrocketed to the top of our table and now has the greatest chance of winning the NWSL championship — 37 percent — up from just a 5 percent chance before the season started. With the league’s top two goal scorers, Lynn Williams and Jessica McDonald (seven and six goals, respectively), the Flash are almost certain to earn a playoff spot. The Washington Spirit will likely grab another — our model gives them a 96 percent chance of making the playoffs. There’s a little less certainty for the third and fourth playoff spots. The Portland Thorns are currently in first place in the league, with 26 points, and have an 86 percent chance of making the postseason. But the team has lost their past two games, in part because several national team players have been absent as they prepare for the Olympics. So Portland may continue to fall in our rankings over the next month. The Chicago Red Stars’ chances of making the playoffs have remained about the same from our initial forecast — dropping to 46 percent from 47 percent — but a strong start to the season has given way to three losses in the past four games. The biggest shock this season, however, has undoubtedly been the rapid descent of the league’s top two teams, Seattle and Kansas City. Both teams were heavily favored in our initial predictions — with a 78 percent and 72 percent chance of making the playoffs, respectively — but at this point, it’s extremely unlikely that either team will earn a playoff berth. There are still six weeks of matches left, but both teams’ chances of winning the championship have plummeted more than 20 percentage points since the season started. read more

Keita should thrive at Liverpool – Xabi Alonso

first_imgOne of former Liverpool midfielder favourites Xabi Alonso says Naby Keita is in the right frame of mind to become a shining star under the leadership of Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp.Alonso retired from playing football in 2017 and has showered praises for the latest Liverpool signing while also being confident he will make a tangible impact at Anfield.“He’s a big personality,” Alonso, who came up against Keita twice during his final season at Bayern Munich, told Liverpool’s official website.“He has the hunger, the will to compete, and after in football terms he’s an all-around midfielder.“[He’s] Good with the ball, he runs and dribbles very quickly with the ball, but he also likes to make things tick in the midfield.”divock origi, liverpoolReport: Origi cause Klopp injury concerns George Patchias – September 14, 2019 Divock Origi injury in today’s game against Newcastle is a cause for concern for Jurgen Klopp.Perhaps with one eye on Tuesday’s trip to Italy…Alonso added:“I think for this position in front of the holding midfielder, or even as a holding midfielder [or] close to the front three, he can have that role to find the space and to be up there. So [he’s a] good signing.“He will have to adapt to the idea [of Klopp’s philosophy], but I don’t think that he will have many problems because he’s a great player and very complete.“[Under] Jurgen you need to do [play like] ‘bang, bang, bang’ and if he gets it, he will do well. [I see him as] An eight. I would say an eight, sometimes he can play as a six, but I could see him more as an eight behind the three strikers.”last_img read more

The reason Paul Pogba wont leave Manchester United

first_imgAfter so much speculation over Paul Pogba’s future, a report from Spain claims the reason Manchester United will never let Paul Pogba leave the club.As tensions grow higher between Paul Pogba and Jose Mourinho at Manchester United, there has been a lot of speculation over the future of both men at the club.Just a few days before the Red Devils played that Premier League match at Old Trafford against Newcastle, there were reports from the English media that suggested Jose Mourinho will get sacked for good regardless of his result against Rafa Benitez’s squad. The match finally arrived and the Red Devils struggled to get a victory, the Portuguese manager claimed after that match that there was a manhunt against him and the players were scared because of that.Paul Pogba’s case is even more interesting than Mourinho’s because it’s well-known that his agent wants the French midfielder to leave the club by the end of the season but that can be impossible because of a very compelling reason. The French player has been repeatedly going public on social media about his desire to leave the club, with ambiguous messages and public statements that have angered the fans mostly. The Glazers will NOT sanction the sale of Paul Pogba. He is Manchester United’s ‘Messi’ and is untouchable according to the owners. He is an integral member of the squad, with or without José Mourinho. (Source: Mundo Deportivo) pic.twitter.com/pdwoBmKEi6— Transfer News Live (@DeadlineDayLive) October 12, 2018But regardless of what either the player or his agent want for the future, a report fro Mundo Deportivo confirms that the Glazer Family has absolutely no intention of letting their most expensive player leave and they would rather pay Mourinho his €27 million instead of accepting any offers for Paul Pogba. The former Juventus player grew up in the Manchester United academy, only a misunderstanding with Sir Alex Ferguson drew him away from the club but the Glazer family regards Pogba as their own “Lionel Messi” due to his beginnings as a Red Devil and all the history he has with the club. The board of directors plans to approach directly to the player and keep offering him as many contract renewals as he wants, because they want him to retire at Manchester United and take the club back to its glory days with his skills. The problem here is that Pogba might not want to stay at the club for many years, the Glazers will have to do a lot of convincing with both him and the agent in order to keep him interested. The last resort plan would be to sell him if he wanted to leave for good, but they would make the negotiations extremely difficult for any club that came after him.David Villa, FC BarcelonaTop 10 players who played for both Barcelona and Valencia Boro Tanchev – September 14, 2019 Time to talk about the best players who represented both Barcelona and Valencia, prior to their La Liga encounter at Camp Nou this [email protected] with the Mickey Mouse hands 😂 pic.twitter.com/dBpBNzSaIT— Bleacher Report (@BleacherReport) October 12, 2018FC Barcelona is well aware of the whole situation, they already know where the club owners stand and they are not willing to go to war against them over one player. This new information about Paul Pogba is the reason the Catalan club is already looking for other options, because they consider the Frenchman as an impossible target right now. There is no way that FC Barcelona is going to offer more than €100 million for any player, even if that player is named Paul Pogba and he is one of the best midfielders in the world. Also, this whole situation kind of looks like it’s not going to end well for Jose Mourinho regardless of what happens. We say that very loosely because even if he gets sacked by the Glazer family, the man will walk away with a big fat check and the chance of coaching another great club around Europe. This is a win-win situation for the Portuguese manager, and not so much for Paul Pogba because he doesn’t really have much say in this whole situation.Los campeones del Mundo no paran de celebrar 😎(Vía @paulpogba ) pic.twitter.com/p1OVYUMvta— Goal en español (@Goal_en_espanol) October 12, 2018What do you think about the Glazer family not letting Paul Pogba leave Manchester United? Buffon is not after the Champions League anymore

first_imgItalian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, told the press that his dream of someday winning the Champions League is long gone from his targets. In the life of Gianluigi Buffon throughout over 24 years of career, winning the Champions League almost became an obsession but he never really could fulfill that life goal after so many years.Watching the goalkeeper crying after losing a final became something very common during his time at Juventus, his side was simply not fortunate enough to get that recognition and he eventually decided to stop losing sleep over it.Now that he has made the switch to PSG, the Italian goalie is mostly thinking about the best way to retire and he considered several options as he revealed this Tuesday.PSG just won a Coupe de la Ligue match vs Orleans 2-1, Buffon got in for Areola during the second half and played a fairly good match in the time he had to prove that he is still in great shape. After the game, the press wanted to ask him some questions about retirement and what he is expecting in the Champions League this season for PSG.Manager Thomas Tuchel has made the decision to split the time for both goalkeepers, something that has filled the Italian with hopes for him this season. It was going to take a special offer to keep Gianluigi Buffon in football. He got it ✍️ pic.twitter.com/N4znJu9lPu— B/R Football (@brfootball) December 18, 2018“I had decided to retire. In my mind, I thought the only option was if Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid or Barcelona had come calling,” he told RMC as quoted by Football Italia.“They were the clubs I considered crazy, a dream that wasn’t really worth thinking about seriously. So I was already organizing my post-football life.”“Yet this call arrived in May. I took two weeks to think about it, because if I make a promise and give my word, I want to do it well. I don’t like to embarrass myself.”“After a little introspection and analysis, I thought to myself, I can do another year or two and I can do it well.”“I think PSG will be my last club, because this was a gift to me from life, a reward for behaving professionally. I want to stop playing at a top level club. I never considered going to another country, as I started at a top level and want to end at a top level, that is for sure.”Colin Dagba, France,How Dagba become one of PSG’s regulars Manuel R. Medina – September 14, 2019 21-year-old full-back Colin Dagba had a very difficult time to break into professional football, but now he’s one of PSG’s regular players.“As soon as I met the directors, they said our objective is not to win the Champions League, because over seven years we’ve realized this is really difficult. You can’t set that as a target, but we have the ambition to improve, that is true.”“Paris Saint-Germain reached the quarter-finals, so the objective is to take a couple more steps forward and keep going that way.”“I have been trying for 24 years to win the Champions League and never won it! So I know how hard it is to have just that objective, and above all how wrong it can be to have just that as an objective,” he concluded.Tiene 40 años y sigue compitiendo en la UEFA Champions League. Cook Inlet Management Coordinator Matt Miller: “As of June 17, 2018, an estimated 2,116 large king salmon have past the River Mile 13.7 king salmon sonar. This closure is not an easy decision; however, even after prohibiting harvest of king salmon in the fishery last week, we are not projecting to meet the escapement goal and need to take this next step.
